Moong dal tadka recipe - This is no onion no garlic dal recipe. You can also call this a jain dal recipe.
For making this dal basic ingredients are used and this can be ready very quickly. For the tempering or tadka, tomatoes and few spices are used.
Even though this dal is made without onion garlic, still you will not miss any flavor. Trust me and give it a try.
This one of the healthy dals that I make at home regularly.
My in-laws are Jain and I learned this recipe from my mother-in-law. She makes this dal once a week and now I do too.
For light meal, I make this moong dal recipe. While dal is pressure cooking, I put the rice on another stove to cook. So both gets ready at the same time and within 30 minutes I have meal ready. I also roast the papad and sometimes make kachumber salad to go on side.

This is lovely. I eat onions but am very lazy to chop. Blessing in disguise for me. Thanks
Great to hear that you liked this dal recipe
Thank you so much for publishing these recipes, especially the ones with no onions or garlic, as I take the 8 Mahayana (Buddhist) Precepts occasionally and need to avoid these substances, but am still interested in eating tasty food 🙂 I really enjoyed the dal, and it was easy to make. Just a few questions for you - is "red chili powder" the same thing as what we Americans call "cayenne chili"? Also, instead of jaggery, I used brown sugar. Do you think there's a big difference between the two? Again, thanks, I like your blog very much and look forward to trying some other recipes very soon.
Happy to hear that you like dal recipe.
Red chili powder and Cayenne chili has only once difference that the type of dried chili used is different for making both powders. But you can cayenne instead of red chili powder.
Instead of jaggey you can use brown sugar. There will not be very slight difference in taste. FYI, the flavor of melted jaggery syrup is same as molasses.
Thank you for the recipe.
I have a food allergy to onion and garlic (and all allium family). I is great to find recipes that are authentic and full of flavour, we will definitely be trying this.
