Hot Cocoa Mix (Without Powdered Milk)
This is our favorite homemade hot cocoa mix. It has much better flavors than store-bought mix because this one is made with real chocolate and without powdered milk. It is super easy to make at home.
About This Recipe
This hot cocoa mix is the perfect homemade Christmas gift. This can be packed into a regular jar or mason jar mugs. Tie a ribbon or a simple tag with instructions on it and a simple, delicious gift is ready. You can pack some toppings in a separate container or a bag.
Taste & Flavor: This mix makes a delicious and decadent hot chocolate or cocoa that is not overly sweet. It has a rich and deep real chocolate flavor.
Difference between homemade vs store-bought: This homemade mix needs to be mixed in milk and not water. Because this hot cocoa mix is made without powdered milk.
Ingredient Notes
- Powdered sugar: It adds sweetness. You can use regular white sugar as well. I am using powdered sugar as it dissolves faster.
- Corn starch: It helps to thicken the hot cocoa slightly.
- Cocoa powder: I have used regular unsweetened cocoa powder that is widely available in any grocery store.
- Dark or Unsweetened chocolate: The real chocolate adds a rich chocolaty flavor. Always use good quality chocolate to get the best flavor.
Make Hot Cocoa Mix Without Powdered Milk (Pics)
- Add all the ingredients (powdered sugar, cornstarch, cocoa powder and finely chopped chocolate) to a food processor jar.
- Cover it with a lid.
- Place a kitchen napkin over it (otherwise powder dust will fly everywhere) and run the processor until everything is finely ground.
- Open the lid and store it in an airtight jar or container.
Prepare Hot Chocolate Drink From Mix
- Heat 1 cup of milk (for 1 serving) in a saucepan over medium heat.
- As soon as you notice bubbles forming from the sides, add 3-4 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix and whisk until everything is well combined. (It takes only 20-30 seconds).
- Pour into a serving cup, add marshmallows or whipped cream or your choice of topping and serve.
Expert Tips
- Don’t have a food processor. Mix everything by hand. It won’t be smooth but that’s ok. You need to simmer the milk and hot cocoa mix a little longer as chopped chocolate will take some more time to dissolve.
- Scalable: You can half or double the recipe as needed. If you’re making a really large batch then you may have to do it in batches depending on the size of your food processor.
- Flavor it up: You can add vanilla extract or a few drops of peppermint extract after making hot chocolate drink.
Storage Instructions
- Store in an airtight container or jar.
- Keep the container in a cool, dry place away from the sunlight.
- This can be stored for up to six months when stored properly. I’m sure it won’t last that long.
