Tahini Recipe (How to make Tahini Paste), Homemade tahini paste recipe

Homemade Tahini Recipe - This is nothing but the paste of roasted sesame seeds. This is the basic recipe and used in making many other middle eastern dishes like dips, sauces and salad dressing.

Making tahini at home is much more economical. On top of that you will have the fresh batch whenever needed. It takes just few minutes only.

When made fresh at home, it will be creamy with nice nutty smell.

If making in bigger batch then store them in refrigerator in airtight container. It stays good for 3-4 weeks.

Usually this tahini is made from white sesame seeds. But here I have used brown sesame seeds. Because this is what I have available in my pantry.

Since I have used brown sesame seeds, this tahini paste has faint bitterness. This taste is not noticeable once used in other recipes. But if made from white ones, there won’t be any bitter taste.

For roasting the seeds, I have done that on stovetop on medium low heat. Alternately you can toast them in the oven too. For that arrange them in a large baking sheet in thin almost single layer. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F or 180 degrees C. Bake into preheated oven for 10 minutes. Keep an eye on it and make sure not to burn them.

    1) Take sesame seeds in a pan on medium low heat. Dry roast them with stirring constantly till they are toasted and you will get nice nutty aroma of it. Also you will notice they will start to make popping sound and may fly around from the pan. That time turn off the stove.

    2) Remove it to a plate immediately to stop further roasting. Let them cool down for 5-10 minutes.

    3) Then take them into the grinder or food processor. Run it and make crumbly mixture. Oil from the sesame seeds will start to release.

    4) Now add olive oil.

    5) Blend again till you get smooth, thick paste. You may need to stop and scrape the sides in between.

    6) Check with spoon, it should be smooth yet thick, runny paste. If needed you can add more olive oil to get desired consistency. But above given measurements should work perfectly fine.

Serving suggestion: This tahini paste or sesame paste is used in making many different recipes like salad dressings, tahini sauce, baba ganoush, hummus. Or it can be used as a spread for wrap, roll or sandwiches.
