🧾 Ingredient Notes
Here is the pic of the ingredients to make this creamy avocado dip recipe. All of them are simple and easy-to-find ingredients.
- Avocado: Ripe avocados are essential to making the best-tasting avocado dip recipe.
- How to choose ripe avocados?
- Skin Color: Is the skin color green, dark green or nearly black? Green means unripe. Ripe avocados have dark green to nearly black skin.
- Skin Texture: Unripe one has smooth skin vs ripe avocado skin has a bumpy texture.
- Firmness: Give avocado a gentle squeeze. If it feels firm and hard then it’s unripe. If it feels soft yet firm then it’s perfectly ripe. If it feels mushy and super soft then it’s overripe.
- How to buy?
- You rarely get the perfectly ripe avocado from the store. Try to plan and buy the avocados for spicy guacamole 2-3 days in advance. Let them ripe on the countertop, once they are ripe, store them in the refrigerator until ready to use.
- How to choose ripe avocados?
- Sour cream: It makes the dip creamy, rich and slightly tangy. Alternately, you can use greek yogurt or full-fat plain yogurt.
- Scallion (green or spring onion): I prefer to use scallions as they have a mild flavor compared to regular onions.
- Garlic: It adds a garlicky flavor. If you don’t like the garlicky taste then skip it
- Cilantro: It adds a nice fresh, herby flavor. Try with other herbs like parsley or dill leaves or basil.
- Jalapeno: I like a hint of spice in my avocado dip. The spice level is adjustable as per your liking.
- To make it mild, use only half or a quarter of the jalapeno. Plus, remove and discard the seeds and veins of the jalapeno.
- Salt & pepper: When it comes to the salt I always say add as per your taste. But when it comes to the avocados I suggest adding a little extra salt that makes the flavor pop. Just like spicy guacamole recipe, this dip needs more salt than you think. But always starts with less, if it tastes bland then add more.
- Lime juice: It adds a tangy, fresh & bright flavor.
- The right amount and the combination of salt and lime juice bring out the best flavor of avocado dip.
- Ground cumin: It adds flavor, plus cumin helps in easy digestion.
👩🍳 How To Make Avocado Dip? (Pics)
1) Add peeled and pitted avocados in a food processor along with rest of the ingredients (sour cream, scallion, garlic, cilantro, jalapeno, salt, pepper and lime juice).
2) Process it until smooth and creamy (yet flaked with cilantro).
Taste (if serving as a dip, taste with a chip that you’re serving. As tortilla chips can be salty) and don’t be shy on the salt. Add an extra pinch, you’ll be amazed how the flavors come together.
💭 Expert Tips
- Be generous on salt. Taste your dip, if it tastes bland then add more. Always go for an extra pinch of salt, you’ll be amazed how flavorful it makes.
- The right amount of lime juice and salt makes the perfect tasting avocado dip.
- This doesn’t turn brown that quickly as there is a good amount of lime juice in it. Though after storing, the next day you may notice some browning on the top surface. Lime juice slows down the browning (oxidizing) but doesn’t prevent it.
🥣 Storage Instructions
To keep the browning at a minimum, follow the steps below.
- Store leftover dip in a glass tall and narrow container. We are using a narrow mouth container so very less surface area is exposed to the air.
- Using the back of the spoon, spread it evenly and make a flat surface on top.
- Now cover the surface using plastic wrap. Make sure that wrap it touching the guacamole surface. Try to remove as much air as possible.
- Store it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Freezing is not a good idea.
- After doing all these, you’ll still notice a few browning spots. Stir it in and enjoy. It is ok to eat that dip.
