List of Fruit Names in English, Hindi and other languages

Of all the food we eat, Fruit is perhaps the most beautiful. Try to buy seasonal and local fruits. Anything that has been transported thousands of miles by air or sea is often picked under-ripe in order to survive the journey. Those will never taste as good as when freshly picked and at the height of its season.

Sweet, ripe fruits provide valuable nutrients to the body. You will notice more energy and happiness from eating fresh organic fruits on daily basis. Fruits are also valued for their ability to cleanse the body from toxins.

Below is the handy table that may help you. The first column has English name of the fruit and following columns have names in Indian regional languages. You will notice the links in the English column. Those links will provide you the list of recipes made using that fruit.

If I have missed any or if you know any regional language names, please let me know in comments below.

I will try to add other languages in future. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  1. Dear Ms. Kanan Patel,
    Greetings!
This is a good effort, especially gathering names of fruits in different languages. Congratulations. Keep it up.
But you can go a long way in this work. There is more than 300 spoken languages in India.
Please note there is an error in the Malayalam name of Papaya: It is: KAPPLANGA (Not KAPPANGA)-it is also called Karmoosa / Pappaya in Malayalam.
    Avocado: Malayalam: Vennapazham/Muttapazham.
Musk Melon: Malayalam: Thaikkumbalam / Kasthuri Matha/Kasthuri Vellari.
    Lychee: Malayalam: Lichee.
Orange: Malayalam: Naaranga / Madhura Naaranga (Not NARANG)

    Thanks and Regards

  2. Hi Kanan,

Can you add Indian black plum / Jambu / jamun to your fruits list? (my most favorite)
Can you add Jujube / bore / bare (Hindi) to your fruits list? (2nd favorite)
Can you add sapota / chikoo to your fruit list? (3rd fav but very popular with others)

Jambu or Jamun is one of my favorite fruits. It’s black, sweet and very tasty but like sitaphal, bore and chickoo, Americans generically find these tastes too strong. However they have a strong identity to Indian culture so that all Indians recognize, know and love these fruits.

I’m assuming you must have some reason you have not included these fruits.

But just wanted to thank you. I love your food ingredient glossary.
It’s also something that I’m interested in understanding.

Thanks again for the great site!
I don’t cook much but hopefully my wife checks it out.
