❤️ You’ll Love Sweet Potato Fries

  • Healthier alternative: This air fryer method uses less oil. Hence fewer calories and less fat.
  • Texture: It is slightly crisp from the edges and soft, tender from inside.
    • NOTE: They will get soft as it cools down, after all, they are sweet potato fries. So serve them right away.
  • Easy to make: Cut, toss and air-fry. The procedure couldn’t be simpler than this.
  • Customizable: Try different seasonings as per your liking. I had to add Indian touch so I have added chaat masala. More ideas are mentioned below in the variations section.
  • Versatile: These can be served as a side dish with your favorite main or served as a snack or appetizer with a dipping sauce.

🧾 Ingredient Notes

  • Sweet potatoes: My sweet potato was medium-large in size. So I have used just one and it was enough for 2 people for a snack.
  • Oil: just enough to coat the fries.
  • Seasoning: I am using cayenne pepper, garlic powder, chaat masala and salt-pepper.
  • Cornstarch (or cornflour): It helps to make the fries little extra crisp. Instead, you can use arrowroot flour or rice flour.

🔪 How To Cut A Sweet Potato For Fries?

  1. Scrub and wash the sweet potato well.
  2. Peel and discard the skin. Trim of the pointy ends.
  3. Now cut the potato in half lengthwise.
  4. Then again cut it crosswise.
  5. If your sweet potato is thick then slice it in half.
  6. Cut each slice into ¼-½ inch thick fries. Don’t cut the fries too thin otherwise, they will get chewy and might get burned. Keep in mind that fries will shrink in size after cooking.

5) Add them into the air fryer basket and spread them into a single layer.

6) Air fry at 400°F for around 12-15 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through for even browning. Depending on the thickness of your fries, it may take a couple of minutes more or less.

NOTE: I am making fries from 1 sweet potato only. So I have made it in one batch only. If your doubling or tripling the recipe then you may need to do it in batches.

How to keep fries warm while air-frying next batches?

  • Option 1: For a larger batch (more than 3) – Preheat the oven to 200°F. Arrange the air-fried, cooked fries on a baking tray and keep in the preheated oven. Keep adding the batches as they are done.
  • Option 2: For 2-3 batches amount – Once all batches are air-fried, toss everything back into the air fryer basket and reheat for about 2-3 minutes.

💭 Expert Tips

  • Cut the fries into even thickness and length. So all of them get air-fried at the same time.
  • Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Make sure the fries are in a single layer otherwise they won’t become crisp. They will get cooked but will stay soft.
  • Halfway through the cooking process turn over the fries for even browning and cooking.
  • No need to soak the fries after cutting as we do in french fries (made from regular potatoes). Sweet potatoes don’t have that much starch in them, so no worry about soaking them.
  • Cornstarch or arrowroot flour or rice flour is added to make the these fries a little extra crispy.
  • Serve them ASAP. As they cool down they will become soft, soggy and lose their crispness.

🍽 Serving Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Side dish: Serve these healthy fries as a side with your burgers (like kidney bean burger, aloo tikki burger) or sandwiches.

Snack or appetizer: Enjoy them with your favorite dipping sauce (e.g. ranch, fry sauce, ketchup, chipotle sauce, tahini sauce). Indian spiced one can be served with cilantro chutney.

For Babies: Skip spicy seasoning and salt. Try to use mild-flavored seasonings. Also, reduce cooking time to make fries just cooked and soft.
