The History

Mango Mastani was created at Gujjar Cold Drinks in Pune. The place was started by BM Gujjar’s grandfather in 1933, and it originally served a drink called “ice cream cold drink” made from their special mango syrup, ice cream and milk. In 1970s, the drink became popular, and customers started calling it “Mast” (means ‘amazing’) like Mastani (Peshwa Bajirao’s lover who was known for her beauty and elegance). That’s how this drink got its name ‘Mango Mastani’.

About This Recipe

  • Mango mastani is an indulgent drink that almost falls into the dessert category like falooda.
  • Taste & Texture: Full of mango flavor, it has a sweet, rich, and creamy texture.
  • Easy To Make: Despite looking like there’s a lot going on, this mango mastani is super simple to make with just a few steps—blend the milkshake and add the toppings.
  • Quick: Ready in just 15 minutes!
  • Perfect for the summer: This is a must-try recipe for mango lovers like you.

Ingredient Notes

Here are some notes about the ingredients used for making mango mastani recipe.

  • Mango: Fresh, ripe mangoes are best, but you can use canned mango pulp. Frozen Alphonso mango cubes or pulp from Indian grocery stores work well too.
  • Type of mango: If you’re in India, Alphonso mango is perfect for this. In the USA, I prefer Ataulfo mango (champagne mango), a Mexican variety that tastes similar to Kesar mango.
  • Milk: Whole full-fat milk gives the drink a rich, creamy texture.
  • Sugar: Adjust the sugar to taste, depending on how sweet your mango is.
  • Ice cream: Use good-quality vanilla ice cream, but for extra mango flavor, you can go for mango ice cream.
  • Nuts: I’ve used finely chopped almonds and pistachios for garnish.
  • Tutti frutti: Available at most Indian grocery stores.
  • Maraschino cherry: Optional, but it makes a cute garnish!

My Tips

Chill the Mango: For an extra refreshing drink, refrigerate the mango before using. This keeps the drink super chilled.
Make Ahead: Prepare the mango milkshake and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. When ready to serve, simply pour it into a glass and add the toppings.

  1. Absolutely delicious and here in Kerala we are on a Mango. Feast although the Alphonso’s coming to an end now, but never mind. Will make this tomorrow as treat for visiting daughters.
