Til modak recipe – a variation of usual modak recipes. It is made from sesame seeds and jaggery.

During the festivals, we do have many other tasks and so many other thing going on. Many time we may not have enough time to go through lengthy process of making modak.

This is the QUICK version. Just make sweet mixture from til and jaggery and shape using moulds. There is another version of making sesame seeds modak where the outer layer is made from rice flour and stuffing is made from sesame seeds.

The taste of it is similar to til chikki but the texture is soft.

1) Take sesame seeds in the pan. Turn the heat on medium-low.

2) Dry roast them with stirring constantly for 3-4 minutes. We are not looking for color change, just slightly warming up.

3) Remove it to a plate and let it cool down.

4) Once cool, coarsely grind them. I like some texture so I grind them coarsely. If you want you can make fine powder too.

5) Heat the ghee in a same pan on medium heat.

6) Add jaggery.

7) Mix and cook with stirring constantly

8) and let the jaggery melt. Do NOT let it boil, just melt otherwise modak will become hard.

9) As soon as it is melted, add ground sesame seeds.

10) Mix quickly and turn off the stove.

11) Remove the mixture to a plate. And let it become warm or cool to touch.

12) Once cool to touch, feel the mixture by hand and try pressing in your palm. If it comes together than you are good. If it looks dry then add 1 teaspoon of water or milk at a time and mix. The mixture may get sticky.

13) Mine was little dry so I added 1 tablespoon of milk.

14) Grease the mould using ghee and start shaping them by tightly pressing.

As it cools completely, it will firm up more. You can pop in the fridge to cool quickly.

If making on regular days then you can shape into ladoo and serve as a snack or dessert.

Serving suggestion: During ganesh chaturthi festival, it is offered to Lord ganesha. Along with sweets, few savories are also offered to the god.

Ingredients (1 cup = 240 ml)

  • 150 grams or 1 cup Sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee (Clarified butter)
  • 125 grams or ⅔ cup Jaggery (Gur)
  • 2-3 teaspoons Milk or water
