Moth beans also known as Matki. This moth beans recipe is very quick to make as we are making it in the pressure cooker.

If you have planned earlier and soaked the beans then it will be ready in only 20 minutes.

While beans are pressure cooking, make rice and you will have healthy, homey dinner or lunch ready in only 30-35 minutes. It is life saver for me on busy weekdays.

I was not sure what to call this recipe.. Matki masala or moth beans curry or something else. I was unable to decide so I stick with simple name ‘matki recipe’.

Moth beans are similar to whole green moong in terms of shape and size. But the color of matki is brownish yellow while moong beans are dark green.

For more healthier option, add sprouted moth beans instead. If used sprouted then cook it for only 2 whistle and reduce the water quantity. Or you can make Matki usal recipe using sprouted moth beans.

Serving suggestion: Serve this with plain steamed rice and also have roasted urad papad on side.. It can be served with paratha or phulka roti as well.

Yes you can use 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste. Add it after the onions are softened and saute for 30-40 seconds then add tomatoes and continue.

      Hi Kanan,
I was very happy to find your recipe and your blog about Indian cooking/recipes. I was looking for cooking instructions for moth beans and found the recipe for matki or moth beans curry. It sounds absolutely delicious and I am anxious to try it. One problem though is I don't understand a small part of the instructions. Although your instructions are, for the most part, VERY clear and the photos impressive, I did not understand 2 things in direction #12 of this recipe. First you did not say what weight to use for the pressure cooker (I have a choice of 5#, 10#, 15#). Second thing was answered in the comment/question by Neil, "let it whistle for 5-6 times". You answered about 15 min . I would greatly appreciate it if you could clear up what weight to use for the pressure cooker for me so I can try this enticing recipe! Thanks! I look forward to exploring your blog for many other Indian recipes. I love the flavors and spicing of Indian food! And it looks like your blog will be very helpful to me in expanding my limited horizons of Indian cooking! Thanks again!
